"Stalin as an Organiser of the October Revolution" by Karp Trokhimenko (1885-1975). Painted in the 1940s. It is an oil on canvas, of size 85 x 117 cm.

"Stalin as an Organiser of the October Revolution" was painted during World War II, when Josef Stalin was at the height of his power, and implementing his cult of personality. During the early years of the war, when the Soviet Union was being beaten back, people began to question Stalin's organisational and strategic skills. To both restore his own credibility and restore the morale of the nation, Stalin commissioned numerous portraits of himself as a young man organising the Bolsheviks, despite the fact that his role in the actual October Revolution was limited.

Contrast "Roses for Stalin", which portrays him as a benevolent man who loves children.
