St Mary's School Ascot is a Roman Catholic public boarding school for girls in Ascot, Berkshire, England founded in 1885. The school now has about 360 pupils.
[edit] History
St Mary's Ascot was founded by the order of nuns known as the Congregation of Jesus (CJ), formerly the [[Institute of the blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM). In 1998 the school had its first lay (not a nun) head teacher, Mrs Mary Breen, and now has only one teaching nun remaining; Sister Michaela. The school stays strongly linked to its religious ties, with its own chaplin, Fr Dermot, who is much loved by pupils, staff, and parents.
In 2006, the school opened its new sports centre named The Orchard Centre after the family from which the two previous headmistresses came. The Orchard Centre was opened by the prima ballerina, Darcy Bussell. The school has many ties with Eton: They are geographically close and many families choose to send their sons to Eton and their daughters to St Mary's. The current headmistress, Mrs Mary Breen, was previously head of Physics at Eton; which explains the school's very strong science, and especially physics, department. The school always does very well academically in the league tables. The school has a very good parent support network.
[edit] Notable Alumnae
The school alumnae (or Old Girl) network is worldwide, also known as AOGA - Ascot Old Girl Association. The school has had many famous pupils including European royalty.
