[edit] History
St Marys Cathedral College was established in 1824 as an elementary school by Rev. John Therry, but was not until 1828 that a high school was established. It is one of the oldest Catholic Schools in Australia
St Mary's Cathedral College is conducted by the Christian Brothers and administered by the Catholic Education Office, Eastern Region. The Christian Brothers association with the school dates back to 1911.
Catholic education on the same site as St Mary's Cathedral has been continuous since the 1824, except during the construction of the existing College buildings and the associated Bishops quarters (1987-1991). Schools on the site have been provided with staff by the Benedictine Monks (1824-1882), the Marist Brothers (1883-1910), Sisters of Charity (1883-1967), lay teachers, Christian Brothers and now Christian Brothers and lay staff.
Br. D Standen is the current College Headmaster along side with the first assistant, Mr M. Hanratty. The College's executive team consists of Mr. P Devery, Mr. J Galletta, Mrs. K Harvey and Mr. A Ciaschetti. (Effective of 2007)
[edit] College routine
The college runs on a 7-day cycle with 6 50-minute periods, with a 20-minute recess and a 35-minute lunch. There is also a 30-minute homeroom session, 20 of those minutes dedicated to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read).
Thursdays are operated on a varied cycle of specified periods from the entire timetable. Thursdays operate with four periods, running at 45 minutes each. The rest of the afternoon is dedicated to the student's nominated sport.
[edit] College spirit
The College supports a strong musical tradition, with close ties to the St Mary's Cathedral Choir, Sydney and the Cathedral Liturgies. The College supports strong sporting sides in all CBSA sports and carnivals, and academic results have been increasing to top-levels. Added to this is the huge influx in extra curricular activities students at the college participate in including; Debating, Public Speaking, Mock Trial, Duke of Edinburgh, Soup Kitchen at the Vincentian Village and helping at the Matt Talbot homeless hostel
In this years CBSA competition the Under 14's and senior open basketball teams were champions. along with the Senior open Cricket and Soccer teams who both beat Hitchinbrok in the Final.
Being next to St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney the mother church of Australia, is a significant boon to the Catholic spirituality taught to all students at the College.
St Mary's Cathedral College also celebrates the life and spirit of Edmund Ignatius Rice, the founder of the Congregation of Christian Brothers.
