St Luke's Orthodox Cathedral, Glasgow

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Luke's Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a cathedral of the Greek Orthodox Church located in the area of Dowanhill in the west end of Glasgow, Scotland.

The Church was designed by James Sellars and built in 1877, originally as the Belhaven Church for a United Presbyterian congregation which met there until 1960. It was converted to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Luke, and paid for by Sir Reo Stakis. Stakis had also paid for the first Greek Orthodox church in the city, in 1953.

It was built in the Normandy Gothic style, as preferred by its previous owners and inspired by Dunblane Cathedral.

St. Luke's Greek Orthodox Cathedral is the home of Glasgow's Greek Youth Club, namely Glasgow Hellenic. The youth club meets every week within the church hall to practise Greek Dancing. For over 30 years, various generations of the Glasgow Hellenic Dancers have represented the community at both Greek and non-Greek events. The following is a list of some events at which they have performed: Representation of Cyprus at EU Accession Celebration, Special Olympics Participants Show, Multicultural Tsunami Relief Concert, Mela Festival in Kelvingrove Park, North Glasgow Festival, Solus Peace Festival, West End Midsummer Carnival, Global Glasgow, MayDaze Festival, Doune Fling Festival and Glasgow Multicultural Festival.

The other cathedrals in Glasgow are Glasgow Cathedral (Church of Scotland), St. Andrew's Cathedral (Roman Catholic) and St. Mary's Cathedral (Episcopalian).
