St Kilda Festival
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The St Kilda Festival is a popular community festival held in the Melbourne (Australia) suburb of St Kilda. Traditionally held on the second Sunday in February, the festival is about showcasing live Australian music, family and children's entertainment, beach activities and much more all presented in a carnival atmosphere. The festival has run since 1981. In 2005, it attracted between 250,000 (police figure) and 400,000 people (Port Phillip City Council).
The festival did not run during 2006 because of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and it was decided to suspend it for one year. The 2007 St Kilda Festival was held from February 3rd-11th. Numbers attending were good in 2007 but down on previous figures. The claim above that "almost half a million people" attended the festival in 2005 is over stated. While attendees in the past have been largely from the "alternative" community those attending currently are mainly well behaved young people from the middle class.
