St John's Regional College
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St John's Regional College is located on Caroline Street in the suburb of Dandenong, in Victoria, Australia. It is a co-educational Catholic High School with students studying years 7 through to 12. The majority of students attended Catholic primary schools in the surrounding parishes.
[edit] Background
The college began when the parish priests of the area invited the De la Salle Brothers to staff a new school. When the school opened in 1958 it was just a tin shed with 120 boys. Students were called to class by a bell hanging in a gum tree. With the progressive amalgamation of St John's and St Angela's School (staffed by the Presentation Sisters) in the 1970s, the first Catholic coeducational regional college in the nation was born. This development coincided with significant enrolment increases. St John's Regional College has developed into a vibrant Catholic community.
[edit] Old Houses
The old housing system of St John's Regional College was:
- McKillop house
- Nagle house
- La Salle house
[edit] New Houses
The new house system was a result of a lack of competitiveness between houses in the previous years in interhouse swimming and athletics. The hope is that the new house system will allow for greater competition between students and a friendly rivalry. Throughout the fifty-year history of St John’s, this phrase has also been translated as Courage strives for the stars.
The six Houses of St John’s – Aquila, Columba, Delphinus, Leonis, Monoceros, and Phoenix - take as their inspiration six of the ‘stars or constellations of heaven’, which are rich in Christian symbolism.
- Aquila - crest Eagle
- Columba - crest Dove
- Delphinus - crest Dolphin
- Leonis - crest Lion
- Monoceros - crest Unicorn
- Phoenix - crest Phoenix
