St Briavel's Castle

St Briavels Castle is a a moated Norman castle at St Briavels, Gloucestershire, England. The existing structure was built as a hunting lodge for the nearby Forest of Dean for King John in 1205 on the site of an earlier stronghold. The towers were added in 1293 as part of Edward I's Ring of Stone around Wales. The main surviving building is the gatehouse with two round towers, now owned by English Heritage and used as a Youth Hostel.

Henry II seized the castle in 1160. Edward I upgraded the castle in 1292. The keep collapsed in 1752. The Castle was once the residence of the Constable of the Royal Forest of Dean.
