St. Peter's Hospital is a 250-bed chronic care hospital located on Maplewood Avenue 3-blocks east of Sherman Avenue South in downtown Hamilton, Ontario specializing in the care of older adults. The hospital is a part of the "St. Peter's Family of Services," which also includes home care, long-term care, and research branches.
Founded by the Anglican Church in 1890 as "St. Peter's Home for the Incurables," St. Peter's long history has greatened its past, but has aged its original south wing, which is still used to house a part of the hospital's Behavioural Health program. The more modern East and West wings house the remainder of Behavioural Health and the entirety of the Complex Continuing Care, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation, and Day Hospital programs.
As a chronic care facility, St. Peter's admits patients by referral and has no emergency room accessible to the public.
505 staff members support and deliver care to patients; clinical staff include nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers, other specialized therapists, and two full-time physicians working as hospitalists. St. Peter's is the only chronic care facility in Canada to use hospitalists to provide care.
