St. Joe State Park
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St. Joe State Park is a State park located in Park Hills, Missouri.
It was once a large producer of lead ore until 1972 when St. Joe Minerals Corp stopped running its operations. In 1976, the land was donated to the state of Missouri and was turned into a state park. When visiting St. Joe State Park, you will still see the historic mining buildings that were used to mine the lead ore. You can tour their museum where you will see artifacts and mining equipment that was once used. It is now a historic Missouri mine.
The actual park is roughly 8,200 acres (3,318 hectares) with 2,000 acres (809 hectares) used as an off-road vehicle riding area that has been set aside for the state's premier ORV riding area. Riders from all over come to enjoy ORV trails, sand piles, and jumps.
The park has two camp grounds for campers with ORVs and horses. It also has hiking, bicycling, and horse trails. There are pavilions and picnic sites, along some some lakes that you can swim or fish in.
