St. Jo, Texas
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saint Jo is a city in Montague County, Texas, United States. The population was 977 at the 2000 census.
The town, established in 1856, was originally known as Head of Elm, named for its location at the headwaters of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. The current name derives from Joe Howell, who laid out the townsite. Howell was an avid opponent of alcoholic beverage sales in the town, and was thereby given the pejorative nickname of "Saint Jo" (which managed to stick to both Howell and the town).
There is another version of Saint Jo's founding around 1872, with Irby Holt Boggess from Tennessee giving leadership in partnership with Joe Howell. This was displayed in the Stonewall Saloon Museum on the town square of Saint Joe in 1986 and is incorporated in a story about Mr. Boggess posted at this URL:

There is not a convenient way to document which version is accurate, but they certainly are interesting, especially in the later version.
