St. George Church

St. George Church in Puthuppally is one of the oldest churches of Malankara Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. Rebel faction leaders, owing allegiance to the Devalokam Catholicose, threw it into litigation and has finally changed hands to the defected faction. At the end the Syrian Christians lost hold of the church and has fallen into the hands of Malankara Orthodox Church. The patron saint of this parish is St. George. Situated by the side of coconut palms and a wide stretch of paddy fields, near the banks of Kodoor River, at a village called Puthuppally which is about 8 km from Kottayam Town, this church is the refuge of thousands of people all over the world who seek the intercession of St. George. It is believed that this church was established in 1640 as a shrine of Changanacherry Pally which is turn was a shrine of Niranam pally. One of the "Ezhara Pallis" consecrated by St. Thomas, The Apostle of India. The annual feast of this Church takes place on May 7 every year.
