St. Francis Xavier Secondary School is located in Mississauga, Ontario, CANADA. It is a Catholic high school in the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, and is home to approximately 2200 students, 128 instructional staff, support staff, and a childcare centre. The principal is currently Neville Mant. The school mascot is the Tiger. The school has been noted to be one of the best schools in the region.[citation needed]
The school was named after St. Francis Xavier (1506-1552), a Jesuit missionary. He is referred to as the Apostle of the Indies, and is the patron saint of navigation, and the missions. He was born Francisco de Xavier near Sanguesa, Spain and was ordained a priest in 1537. As one of the greatest missionaries and explorers in the Far East, his converts numbered hundreds of thousands. Our school celebrates his feast day each year on the 3rd of December.
The school began in September 1990 on a temporary site. After two years, the staff and students moved into the permanent building. The school is located within St. Francis Xavier Parish in the Archdiocese of Toronto, and is the high school for St. Hilary, St. Matthew, St. Jude, St. Gertrude, and San Lorenzo Ruiz Elementary schools. As part of the Dufferin-Peel portable replacement plan, the school received a three floor, twenty-two room addition which was completed in June of 2001.
Construction of Saviour of the World Chinese Catholic Church started during the 2002/03 school year, the Church now shares property with the school.
