St. Anne Convent
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
St. Anne Convent, also known as the Moya Center, is a Roman Catholic community consisting mostly of sisters, priests, and brothers of the faith. The convent is located in Melbourne, Kentucky. Over 170 religious peoples live in the convent and immediate property.
The convent was constructed through the works of three French Sisters of Divine Providence of St. Jean de Bassel. The sisters obtained land in Newport, Kentucky through the financing of Bishop Camillus Paul Maes and built the Jones Mansion in 1909. The convent was built 10 years later in 1919. It served as an expansion of the Jones Mansion.
In the 1988 movie Rain Man, St. Anne Convent was used as the backdrop of the fictitious Wallbrook mental institution. Actors Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman among others are shown in several scenes in front of the convent and traveling down its long entrance lined with oak trees.
Roman Catholic bishop Ferdinand Brossart, of the Diocese of Covington, Kentucky, rests in the convent's cemetery.
