St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls, or St. Aggie's for short, is a location from the Guardians of Ga'hoole series.

Home to a foul organization of owls, St. Aggie's is one of the greatest evils of the owl world. The owls of St. Aggie's are fiendish, and have many horrible customs. St. Aggie's patrols abduct owlets from their nests, taking them to the canyons that are home to the Academy. There, owls are assigned numbers instead of names, and made to repeat their name over and over as they march. They are also forced to sleep under the moon, facing it, so that they may be moon-blinked. This nefarious process causes an owl to lose all feeling and free will, thus leaving them a hopeless slave of St. Aggie's.

The Academy is home to various locations, including a library where books and other materials are stored. There's also a hatchery, where eggs are placed in nests to hatch, and an eggorium, where the eggs are sorted. One of the most evil locations is the moon-scalding chamber, a room that intensifies the effects of moon-blinking. The owls of St. Aggie's are not particularly intelligent, and are desperate to learn about the metallic elements known as flecks.

St. Aggie's days became numbered when Soren and Gylfie escaped. Following this incident, St. Aggie's became embroiled in conflict with the Pure Ones, another organization of evil owls. After several battles, St. Aggie's was conquered by the Pure Ones. Their leaders later led a group of Guardians from the Great Ga'Hoole tree into the canyons. It was the sight of a major battle that later was called the Burning, as the entire canyon was set ablaze. It was during the battle that Kludd, ruler of the Pure Ones, was killed. What remained of the Academy after the Guardian assault became the base of the remaining Pure Ones.
