[edit] Early history

In 1980, Shawn Stussy sold T-shirts with his drawn signature as well as selling surfboards which he had shaped and manufactured.

Stussy clothing was started as a surf brand inspired by reggae musicians, skaters, hip hop, and DJs. Over time, it grew into more than just a surf brand, but became a general "streetwear" brand, which in turn helped propel Stussy into an international label. The company now makes everything from shirts, pants, caps, shorts, jackets and so on to accessories, bags, shoe collaborations and a Women's line.

Stussy has retail stores around the world, which are referred to as "chapters". Many chapters produce special limited edition items exclusive to that particular chapter.

[edit] Competition

Some of Stussy's competitors have included obey, Supreme, and Zoo York. The Mossimo signature logo is highly derivative of the Stussy logo. The latter two are skateboard companies that have branched out to manufacture clothing. All share a similar casual street look in their designs.
