Stéphane Denève (born 1971, Tourcoing, France[1]) is a French conductor. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire. His early work as a conducting assistant included assignments with Sir Georg Solti for Bluebeard’s Castle with the Orchestre de Paris in 1995 and for Don Giovanni at the Paris National Opera in 1996. He was also assistant to Georges Prêtre for Turandot at the Paris National Opera in 1997, and to Seiji Ozawa for Dialogues des Carmélites at the Saito Kinen Festival in 1998.

Denève made his USA conducting debut at Santa Fe Opera in 1999 with Dialogues des Carmelites[2]. In addition, he has made guest-conducting appearances with other American orchestras, such as the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra[3], Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra[4], Seattle Symphony Orchestra[5] [6] and the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, DC)[7].

In 2004, Denève was named Music Director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO)[8]. In September 2005, he officially assumed the post, his first music directorship[9]. During his first season, he brought the RSNO to France for the first time[10]. He has also conducted the RNSO at the 2006 Proms concerts in London[11].
