Gopal Bose
Hello Srikeit,
I saw your article on Gopal Bose. Unfortunately, I had to delete most of it, because it was taken directly from his Cricinfo profile. As you were already warned above, you can't use text or images from other websites without permission.
Also, you said he played eight Tests. I don't know where you got that from, because he didn't play any Tests.
Thanks,
Stephen Turner (Talk) 14:23, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
- You wrote: Hi stephen! Sorry about the Gopal Bose article. My data was totally fried. Anyway I wanted to ask if we can use statistics from cricinfo, why cant we use their articles & cite them like we do for the stats? I mean sure it will be great if someone writes a new article but till then cant we keep the cricinfo one? Srikeit(talk ¦ ✉) 17:59, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Unfortunately we can't use it. Copyright doesn't protect plain facts, and the statistics fall into that category, so we're fine to use them. We could have got the same data anywhere, and we only have to credit Cricinfo so that we have cited our sources and other Wikipedia readers can check that it's true.
Copyright does protect words and images, however, and we certainly can't copy their articles or pictures. However, we can read their articles, learn about the cricketer, and then describe his career in our own words. We would then give a credit to Cricinfo, but the important thing is that it is in our own words, not theirs.
I hope that helps to explain it.

Vandalism
Looks like you have vandalised your page, yourself. I dont know why, but your page userboxes, remind me of my own page. --Andy123 21:29, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Please sort out the problems with the templates this user is experiencing. I tried myself, but it seems too complex for me ;) --Andy123 21:41, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
Helpme
Hi, I see you've added the {{helpme}} tag. Can I help you with something? --Pilotguy (talk ¦ ✉) 21:56, 1 March 2006 (UTC)
The best thing to do is to oragnize your userboxes in a fashion similiar to my page. Place all of your userboxes in between {{Boxboxtop|Title goes here}} and {{Boxboxbottom}}, like I've done. For languages, you can use Wikipedia:Babel. There are instructions on how that works, as well as the "language codes",here.

Your userpage was briefly delisted by a rogue admin
This user believes that only articles need reflect a NPOV, and that displaying political, religious, or other beliefs using userboxes and user categories should not be banned. |
You have a userbox Template:User UN which links your userpage to United Nations Wikipedians. There is currently a movement to ban userboxes from Wikipedia which are shared and which create List of Wikipedians. Certain admins have taken it upon themselves to preemptively sabotage and/or delete such categories and template. Here is the incident report which reported damage to yours, in which hundreds of userpages were delinked from categories without the users' knowledge. They have been stopped, barely, and the damage reverted— for now.
There is a Wikipedia:Userbox policy poll, which if passed, will make required by policy the damage done to categories and templates such as User UN/United Nations Wikipedians. If you do not want this to happen, I urge you to vote Oppose. in the poll. Support is currently running at about 66%, and your vote could make the difference. It is said to require 75%-80% to be deemed reflective of consensus.
Thank you,
StrangerInParadise 23:20, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
- Some userbox on my page was blanked by him too (and to think I thanked him for his help - I just went to his talk page and blanked the thanks message). I mentioned on the incident report that he blanked another template as well, just so you both know. - nathanrdotcom (Talk • Contribs) 01:07, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
I do not have any views on this issue. It wouldnt make a big difference to me, even if they are removed. Userboxes have been abused in the past. --Andy123 13:10, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Chappell and Ganguly
Thanks for your message, Srikeit. I must admit that I haven't really been keeping up with the Indian cricket articles. That's partly because I can't keep up with the politics in Indian cricket, so I don't know what's true and what's not. But it's also partly because it's so difficult to keep people from pushing their own POV in the articles. The Indian and Pakistani biographies both seem to be constantly edited by people who think that the player is the best ever, or else the worst ever, player in the history of the game. It seems impossible to find someone with a balanced view.
If you want to be bold with these articles, go ahead! They're really quite poor at the moment, and it needs someone to do it. But please realise that you will need to keep monitoring them afterwards, to stop them getting worse again.
PS Why not sign up as a WikiProject Cricket participant? And come and join in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket. You can get other people to give opinions on specific articles there too.

Talk page order
One quick note on talk page etiquette. It's conventional for the newest messages to go at the bottom of the page, not the top. So if you start a new section, it's helpful to do it there. Or even easier: just press the [+] tab at the top of the talk page. That will start a new section and put it at the bottom for you.

Fair use images
Hello again Srikeit,
Thanks for finding some photos for cricketers, but I'm afraid I removed them again. You used them under a "fair use" claim, but fair use is much more restrictive than you think. For example, an image from a newspaper is only fair use in order to talk about the publication of the newspaper, not merely to illustrate the person pictured. Similar rules apply for other types of fair use images, for example TV screenshots. An image doesn't become usable just because it's been in a newspaper or on TV: it can only be fair use when talking about the newspaper publication or the TV program.
Thanks,
Stephen Turner (Talk) 09:27, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- You wrote: what kind of permission should I get to publish these images on Wikipedia?
In principle, you would need to get permission from the newspaper, or perhaps from the photo agency that the newspaper had got the photo from. But you'd be unlikely to get permission. (If it was easier to get photos, we would have a lot more photos of cricketers. It's not that we don't want photos in the articles! It's that it's very difficult to get truly "free" ones). Stephen Turner (Talk) 10:51, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
- You wrote: happen to know some people at the newspaper, including the editor. Do we require a written permisson?
That would be great! Written permission (even an email) would certainly be best, just so that we have a record of exactly what permission was granted. Make sure that the newspaper has the rights to the photo though — sometimes they use library pictures from photo agencies, and then we would have to get permission from the photo agency not the newspaper, because the newspaper only has permission to use it in their own publication. Welcome to Esperanza!
Welcome, Srikeit/archive 1, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.
Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.
In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.
I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of KnowledgeOfSelf, JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in February, and I would be glad to see you vote, or even consider running for a position.
If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact me via email or talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to be!Thanks! - nathanrdotcom (T • C • W) 07:03, 13 March 2006 (UTC)

- You wrote: I was looking at India collaboration of the week when I found the tiny link to WCOTF. I did'nt even know it existed! So what do you think about it?
Thanks for your note, Srikeit. You can try and drum up support on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cricket. I just know that it died rather quickly last time, so I'm not sure whether there's enough enthusiasm for it.
Speaking for myself, I'm much more interested in writing two or three paragraphs about something that has only one sentence, rather than raising a good article to featured status. And in fact, I rarely have time even to do that: I tend to spend most of my time checking Recent Changes and making sure that bad edits get reverted quickly. That's not to say that COTF is not a worthwhile project, on the contrary I think it's a very good thing, but it's not my personal priority.

Thanks but no thanks
I appreciate the words. I'm on a dynamic IP and I like it that way. I don't feel a real need to sign up. I've seen what can and most likely will happen. I'll be sucked into a community that fights, and gets nothing done. I'll just stick to adding content to articles and trying to build this into a encyclopedia. And if you find me done something wrong, do correct me immediately Doctor Bruno 21:06, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
- I think we need to have a chat along with other WP:CRIC people to Doctor Bruno about this. He is going around and writing POV stuff to denigrate Dravid and uplift Tendulkar, using examples from random Test matches which are not indicative of the Test career. I think he has made a very misleading statement on the Dravid page that Dravid has only 1 century on the last innings (ie 4th innings), whereas Tendulkar has made 9 in the second innings (meaning 3rd and 4th innings). Actually in run chases the stats show that Dravid has an average of ~50 in runchases, whereas Tendulkar is only ~35.Blnguyen | Have your say!!! 00:49, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
I apologise. About the Dravid, stats, I am sorry. I did not realise the mistake, until it was pointed out. I have changed it.
But I differ from you in the other issues. What is wrong in telling that Sachin top scored in a match. When there are more than one instance in the page that tells that Sachin is not batting well.
Doctor Bruno 01:59, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
- The fact that Sachin top-scored in the second innings is irrelevant. If we start mentioning a low second-innings high score of 34 by sachin. We are also obliged to mention all the other times he has top-scored in an innings (that being a lot of times). The first innings score can be added because he was booed off by his own home crowd. But just because the second innings is recent doesn't mean that it needs to be added.
Hope that clears it up
Srikeit(talk ¦ ✉) 04:53, 23 March 2006 (UTC)
The second innings top score is important, because, without that, any one will assume that he did not contribute anything in the entire test.
Also according to few reports, the booing was not by the Mumbai crowd, but the Barmy army. If the entire test is not mentioned, it is OK. But when you mention his failure, and even say that he did not score a fifty, you should mention his achievement. This is my opinionDoctor Bruno 15:01, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

Member Cricket Project
Hi Srikeit... Just wanted to ask.... how can we become a member of Cricket Project.
Re: Groups
Experienced user? 1000 (not reached there yet) is a very small figure at Wikipedia. And looking at your work, I hope you would be overtaking me very soon. I have spent the last few days at RC Patrol which is the reason for my high edit count. Reverting vandalism tends to make the edit count look good. But it was a very tedious and tiring job, until I discovered Popups. That combined with User:Lupin/Anti-vandal_tool have made my life relatively easy. I have started many stubs about Indian politicians, especially those from Gujarat. I am a member of the Wikipedia:WikiProject_Politics_of_India. I am interested in cricket, but that interest is only limited to wathcing the game. So I don't think I would be joining that project soon. I have taken the improvement of the Ahmedabad article as my personal mission. Please review my work there so that I don't make any mistakes on that page. I think I will be joining Wikipedia:WikiProject_Indian_cities today. As for Esparanza, I am still deciding.
I'm very sorry, but I don't think I will be able to come to Loyola soon. I have university exams coming up in 15 days. Nirma runs a very tight schedule, and coming on weekdays is virtually impossible for me. I think I will mail Fr. Morondo for a few good pics of the school, else will go and take the pics in my break in May. See if you can get pics before that. - Aksi great 13:43, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
Request,Nomination for removal of Khalistan article
Hello Sir I'm nominating this page for deletion because it is written with a point of view , excessive use of unreliable sources.and the title "Khalistan" is wrong for the topic because "Khalistan" does not exist, lack of support from resident Punjabi's and Sikhs in India, but there was a "Movement for Khalistan" and that is the right title for the topic, and i think this whole article "a new name" should be rewritten with the help of people from sikh community "in" India and other Indians, because this topic is related to politics/people of India. We all should understand Khalistan is not a political entity and having a article is not justified, Microsoft Encarta and Britannic encyclopedia don't have an article known as "Khalistan" but they do have articles on the movement that took place decades back, and i think there are also copyright issues involved with this article because big parts of this article are written on other peoples research. Many reliable sources are used to show "one side" of their view on the topic, there are also indications that organisations banned by US and EU are involved in providing their research on the movement.I am a strong supporter to have a stub on this topic , but im afraid that such articles on wikipedia have become mouthpieces for organisation which are known for disrupting peace (assassination of one of india's prime minister, twin bomb blast in New Delhi on the eve of Diwali) in Indian sub continent. This article requires your attention , please help. Anmol.2k4 18:51, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Sourav Ganguly
Hi Srikeit, its good that your hard work on the Sourav Ganguly article has paid off, with the article shaking NPOV tag off itself. Cheers for that.
As we discussed on the talk page, the article needs to be expanded a bit more with his achievements. I am going to try that. So I started looking into history to figure out what was npov and what should be avoided, but the list is overwhelming. I am currently researching on his achievements (search is done by Google, I re-search in the results), and will get to writing the International Career section soon.
This message is just to congratulate you on the work that you have put in and to say that your help will be heavily needed, as I am going to walk into a heavily disputed area.
Keep up the good work.

I will get onto them as soon as possable, but unfortunately my university commitments are taking up a lot of my time. I know I'll be able to do some on the weekend though. Hi, saw the recent state of the article, after you cleaned it up. In the international career section, the wording of the introductory lines still sound POV to me. I have suggeted an alternative on the talk page. But I refrained from putting it on the article because I wanted to make sure it does not violate NPOV. So I put it on talk page to get it discussed. Please review that. --Soumyasch 18:31, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
