Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII is a flight combat game for the PC, Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 3[1] and the Wii[2]. It was released by Ubisoft during the second fiscal quarter of 2006 for both the North American and European regions. The game features 42 different World War II planes and allows the player to take part in numerous famous events (18 missions) from the war as a fictional squadron. Online support allows 16 players to take part in head-to-head and co-operative play battles. It was released on 24 March, 2006 in the US, and 31 March, 2006 in Europe.

On August 3, 2006 Ubisoft announced that the game would also be released for the Wii and that it would be a launch title.[3] However the game was postponed, and did not make the Wii launch. It was released on Wii on March 20, 2007. On August 16, 2006 Ubisoft announced that the game would also be released for the PlayStation 3 and that it will be a launch title.[4] This version will feature all-new missions, a 16 players online mode and support for PS3's controller motion sensing functions.

The European Windows version is protected by Starforce. At least one published American Windows version also uses Starforce.

[edit] Angels of Dunkirk

The Angels of Dunkirk is the name of the player's squadron in the game. It is made up of the player, Tom "The shield" (joins in 2nd level), Joe "The mechanical wizard" (joins in 3rd level) and Frank "The hunter" (joins in 4th level). The squadron flies a number of different planes.

[edit] Tom "The shield"

Tom is the player's protector, he generally stays near the player, attacking any enemy threatening his life. Tom's special command is 'taunt', when it is used, all enemies engaging the player will temporarily attack Tom. With luck, a player can down some of the enemy planes while they are distracted.

[edit] Joe "The mechanical wizard"

Joe's role in the squadron is the mechanic. He can find new ways to fix the player's plane even during action.

Joe's specific command is Repair. If this command is issued and the player's plane has received enough damage, Joe will ask the player to perform a button combo. Each correct press will repair the plane a little; successfully pressing all buttons will repair the plane to 100% health. A bad button press will end the combo.

[edit] Frank "The hunter"

Frank's role in the squadron is the hunter, he is eager to destroy any enemy, no matter how strong. Frank's special command is 'Ace attack'. When this command is issued, Frank will go all out on the target and other members of the target's formation. Frank can usually kill 3-4 enemies in the short time he is in 'ace attack' mode.

[edit] The Planes

Forty-two of the greatest fighter and attack aircraft of the war are represented in the title, each of which handle differently and are armed with their own unique weapons loadouts.

[edit] British Aircraft

Gladiator biplane - The first aircraft that the player will fly. Legendary in the defense of Malta where its immense agility allowed it to combat the Luftwaffe, it performs extremely well against other fighters despite its lack of armor or firepower.

Sunderland flying boat - Although not seen flying in the game, it appears parked on the airfield in the first mission.

Hurricane - Available in two versions; MK1 and MK2. The MK1 is an extremely capable and a well rounded aircraft, though not as agile as the Spitfire. The MK2 packs a massive punch with 4 20mm cannons, making it lethal against Stukas and early versions of the BF-109.

Spitfire Mk's I, V, and IX - The MK1's eight machine guns can deal heavy damage to light fighters and bombers. The MK5 upgrades with four machine guns and 2 20mm cannons. The MK9 has 4 20mm cannon and boasts massive speed, acceleration and agility making it possibly the best aircraft in the game.

Seafire - a naval version of the Spitfire with a 4 20mm cannon armament but slightly lower speed than its land based counterpart. It is still lethal in the right hands.

Swordfish - Though obsolete by Dunkirk, the "Stringbag" kept on being Britain's prime torpedo bomber until 1944. Exellent acceleration, but by far the most slowest aircraft in the game. It's armanent delivers a good punch too.

Bristol Beaufighter - Although a bomber, it has devastating firepower, thanks to its 6 machine guns and 4 20mm cannons. However, it is slow and unagile. It doesn't mix well with single-engined fighters.

Typhoon - The King of British ground attack aircraft. While not big on agility, it is as fast as a Spitfire MK5 with massive armor and intense firepower.

Tempest - The evolution of the Typhoon and the fastest British piston engine aircraft of the war. On par with the Spitfire MK9 on speed, acceleration, and firepower, but with reduced agility and improved armor.

Meteor - The first Allied jet in service boasts improved agility, armor, acceleration, and firepower over the German Me-262 and Japanese Kikka.

[edit] American Aircraft

P-40 Warhawk - Decent speed and acceleration but fails everywhere else. Useful mostly for training and not in dogfighting.

P-39 Airacobra - Small, fast, and packing a 37mm gun. This plane can take out a Zero, given a little luck. All-around good plane.

F4F Wildcat - Not as maneuverable or as fast as the Zero, it compensated superior firepower. Stories abound from the War about the Wildcat's durability and ability to take massive amounts of hits.

F4U1 Corsair - Fast, highly manouverable and packs quite a punch. It's agility is only topped by the Gladiator. Its high durability makes it deadly in a dogfight.

F6F Hellcat - Modeled after the stubby F4F Wildcat fighter, this was the flawless fighter that put an end to the Zero's air superiority. It has well rounded stats, with great speed, acceleration, agility, firepower, and durability.

SBD Dauntless - Dive-bomber used by the Americans. Decent speed and acceleration, but all other stats are failing.

TBF3 Avenger - Torpedo bomber with the same stats as the SBD Dauntless. The only difference is that the Avenger is far more sturdier, and has a better armanent.

P-47 Thunderbolt - Probably the best ground-attack fighter in the whole game, what the massive P-47 lacks in agility, it makes up for speed, firepower and durability. It has the highest durability out of any fighter in the game.

P-51D Mustang - Argued to be the best fighter of the war, the P-51D is very fast, agile and exellent for taking out fighters. An even better version, the P-51H Mustang, is the fastest piston-engined fighter in the whole game. Both have the same armanent, but the P-51H is faster. The P-51D is more durable.

B-17 Flying Fortress - The biggest airplane in the whole game, the B-17 is also the least agile plane (turning around is almost impossible), but is almost indestructible, thanks to its ludicrously high hit points stat. This bomber is also slow, so watch where you fly.

[edit] German Aircraft

Bf 109 - Germany's most common wartime fighter comes in three versions: the E, which you will fight early in the game, the G, which you fight a lot in the later stages, and the K, which you will fight in the last two missions. All of the planes are fast, are agile, and carry quite a lot of firepower. The K trades agility for speed, accerleration, and firepower, making it an exellent dogfighter.

Bf 110 - This heavy fighter sacrafices agility for speed and firepower. It comes in three versions: the C, the E, and the G.

He 111 - Although not listed in the game, the He 111 appears occasionally during the game, most notably the Battle of Britain mission. They are slow, but are tough and heavily defended.

Stuka - This slippery dive-bomber appears in almost every mission that is against the Germans. They are slow, lightly defended, and very easy to shoot down, but they cause tremendous damage if not taken care of quickly.

Fw 190 - The most difficult plane to challenge in a dogfight, the Fw 190 A boasts strong armor, good speed, exellent agility, and incredibly high firepower (it has 6 20mm cannons). The D9 version is extremely fast, has exellent acceleration, but it has weaker armor than the A version and its armanent is inferior compared to the Fw 190 A.

Me 262 - This jet was the first jet fighter in squadron service. It is the fastest fighter in the whole game, and it also has the strongest firepower (4 30mm cannons). However, all of its other stats are average.

[edit] Japanese Airplanes

A6M2 Zero - Japan's finest hour fighter achieved its glory because of its incredible manouverability. However, it was hampered by poor roll rate, and because of its lack of armor for the pilot and the fuel tanks.

Ki 43 Hayabusa - The "Oscar" was Japan's agile interceptor. It traded armor and firepower for speed and agility. In fact, its firepower was just 2 machine guns.

B5N "Kate" The Japanese torpedo bomber that attacked Pearl Harbor. It was utterly defenseless, having a single machine gun in the rear cockpit. Blowing one out of the sky is easier than most other aircraft.

A3A1 "Val" - Japanese dive bomber that was modeled after the German Stuka. Not as fast as a Stuka, and has horrifically low armor.

J2M Raiden - High speed interceptor used to attack high-altitude B-29 Bombers. Has a high speed, acceleration, and firepower.

N1K Shiden - The best Japanese plane has better stats than any Allied fighter. It was capable of going to head to head with the Hellcat and defeating it.

Nakajima Kikka- Export version of German Messersmitt Me-262
