Spring Cantata (Rachmaninoff)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sergei Rachmaninoff wrote his "Spring" Cantata for Baritone, Chorus, and Orchestra, Op. 20 in 1902 after his famous Second Piano Concerto. The work his based on a poem by Nikolai Nekrasov and describes the return of the zelyonyi shum, or "green rustle". Although simple, the thematic material is well illustrated by lush, soaring melodies typical of Rachmaninoff's style.
Rachmaninoff never got around to revising the cantata's orchestration as he had intended.
