Sir Gareth is a noted Corinthian and a confirmed batchelor after his betrothed of seven years ago died prematurely - something which does not go down well with his sister. So, finally when he does go with the intention of marrying an old friend for reasons that are to do with anything but love, he is shocked to find his sister is still far from happy. This is because Hester is quite on the shelf at the age of twenty-nine, not to mention horribly unfashionable and plain.

However philanthropist as Sir Gareth is, he is not deterred by these disadvantages. Except, it seems that his journey to Hester is not to be as leisurely as he had supposed - of course, the fact that during it he meets a young, run-away girl possessed of an extremely lively imagination doesn't help...
