This template, along with Template:Spoiler bottom is intended to supplement or replace Template:Spoiler. The idea is to make it apparent what portion of the article the spoiler notice refers to. It's not always practical to have the "spoiler" section come last, for example because references, external links, etc. will usually follow.

Typical use is:

{{Spoiler top}}Some spoiler text

Another paragraph
*And some
*List items
{{Spoiler bottom}}

which displays as:

Some spoiler text

Another paragraph

• And some
• List items

An example of a real article that uses this is Bovo-Bukh.

While this template will work properly without the {{Spoiler bottom}} tag, if it's the last thing on the page, but that's not recommended: if someone needs to add more material afterwards, they may not understand quite what needs to be done to get the new material out of the spoiler section.

As an added bonus, placing the contents of User:Korath/Spoiler.js into your personal javascript file (depending on your skin, monobook.js, cologneblue.js, nostalgia.js, myskin.js, or, for Classic, standard.js) will add hide/show links that work like table of contents.

The javascript is currently in draft form: it depends heavily on the current form of the template, and I've tested it only on Opera 7.54. It could use some attention from someone who actually knows how to use the language properly. —Korath (Talk) 21:12, Mar 25, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Colours or tables

And why don't we use background colours or tables to mark the part of the text which might spoil the argument? --Erri4a - Say what? 00:51, 26 May 2005 (UTC)

Actually, I don't much care for the changed background color. It makes the enclosed text look like it isn't part of the article itself, setting it aside as if it were an infobox or navbox. Material containing spoilers is just as much a part of an article's "main" textual content as material that doesn't contain spoilers. Bryan 23:46, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] warning wording?

Occasionally a spoiler will not be about a book or movie; e.g. there is one in Mornington Crescent (game). It would be nice if there were some way, using a pipe trick or somesuch, to replace the spoiler warning's text in circumstances where "plot" isn't relevant. Thanks.
