Spooky Tooth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Spooky Tooth was an English progressive rock band from the late 1960s. They faded into obscurity afterwards, facing problems similar to The Band in that they were more popular among fellow musicians and industry insiders then with the general public, though they still have quite a few devoted fans.
They formed in Oct 1967, out of The Ramrods, 1960 - late 1963, The VIPs, late 1963 - Apr 1967 and Art, Apr - Oct 1967. The line-up changed several times, but typically was Mike Harrison (born Michael Harrison, 3 September 1942, in Carlisle, Cumbria) (keyboards/vocals), Greg Ridley (born Alfred Gregory Ridley, 23 October 1942, in Aspatra, Cumbria died 19 November 2003, in Java, Spain) (bass/vocals), Luther (Luke) Grosvenor (born Luther James Grosvenor, 23 December 1946, in Evesham, Worcestershire) (guitar/vocals), Mike Kellie, (born Michael Kellie, 24 March 1945, in Birmingham, Warwickshire) (drums) and Gary Wright, (born 26 April 1943, in Creskill, New Jersey, USA) (organ/vocals).
They broke up in Autumn 1970, reformed in Sep 1972, split again in Sep 1974, to come back after a short break in 1998.
Another well known member in Mar 1973 to Sep 1974 was Mick Jones (born Michael Leslie Jones, 27 December 1944, in London) (guitar / vocals), later in Foreigner and from Feb - May 1974 Mike Patto (born Michael Thomas McCarthy, 22 September 1942, in Cirencester, Gloucestershire) (vocals). Ridley joined Humble Pie in 1969. Grosvenor played with Stealers Wheel and Mott the Hoople. Wright had a successful solo career.
The well-known song "Better By You, Better Than Me", recorded by Judas Priest, is a Spooky Tooth cover.
