Spontaneous glass breakage

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spontaneous glass breakage is a phenomenon by which toughened glass (or tempered) may break for no reason. This could be for a multitude of reasons, such as delayed fracture due to impact, edge damage, or "mischievous evil elves", ie. toally inexplicably.

However, by far the most common are those caused by a nickel sulphide inclusion.

This is a problem where tempered glass panes are installed overhead or in public areas (such as in high-rise buildings).

Protection from this hazard can be increased by the application of a safety window film to the tempered panes of glass.
