Split Wide Open, Dev Benegal‘s second feature film is about the water wars in Bombay and looks at subversive sexuality in modern India and how our notions of morality are challenged when sex and poverty collide. The Official Selection at the Venice International Film Festival, the film also won the Grand Prix at the Turnhout, Belgium International Film Festival 2000, the Best Actor and Special Jury Award at the Singapore International Film Festival in 2000.

Distributed by 20th Century Fox in a major nationwide release across India the film has become the top three highest grossing art house films in India.
