Spitok

Spitok (or Spituk) gompa, situated 7 km west of the Ladakhi capital Leh is one of the key Gelugpa or Yellow Hat Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh (administering a number of subsidurary monasteries). Containing 100 monks and a giant statue of Kali (unveiled during the annual Spitok festival), the monastery was founded in the 11th century as a Red Hat institution and was taken over by the Yellow Hat sect in the 15th century.
