The Spirit Detective Saga marks the beginning of the anime YuYu Hakusho.

[edit] Yusuke's Death
Episodes 1-5
It begins with a 14 year-old boy called Yusuke Urameshi who sacrifices his life to save a small child from being run over. Once dead, Yusuke is greeted by the grim reaper, a bubbly girl named Botan who takes him to the Spirit World. There, he meets a 700-year old ruler with the body of a toddler called Koenma. Even says it himself in the show. Yusuke goes through a great ordeal to get his life back.
After being brought back to life, Yusuke is appointed as the Spirit Detective of Earth. His job entails fixing spirit or demon related problems that occur on earth, usually resulting in much violence. Yusuke's job is like that of a secret agent, as Yusuke simply goes and solves the problem, however he can. He is given the Spirit Gun and some gadgets which he uses from time to time. He already captures his first demon, Jyaki. Jyaki is a small demon who was possessing the body of a leader of bullies from Rubafuji High School.
[edit] Artifacts of Darkness
Episodes 6-8
Yusuke must face his first mission and retrieve three artifacts that were stolen from Koenma before King Yama (Koenma's father) comes back. Yusuke must fight three demons beginning with Gouki who has possession of the Orb of Baast. Yusuke battles him and kills him by shooting his Spirit Gun into his mouth.
Kurama, the second demon, is too busy caring for his ill mother and tries risking his life for her, but Yusuke helps him by risking his life with him. Kurama gives him the Forlorn Hope as a token of his gratitude.
But Yusuke then encounters the third demon, Hiei who has the Shadow Sword. Hiei kidnaps Keiko Yukimura, one of Yusuke's good friends, and tries to give her a Jagan Eye (third eye on forehead just like Hiei had from a surgeon which you find out about in the Saga of the Three Kings) but Yusuke tracks Hiei down and fights him when meanwhile Botan uses her power to keep the Jagan Eye from opening and leaving it permanent. Hiei soon unleashes his full power and his body turns green and grows eyes everywhere on his body. Yusuke manages to defeat Hiei by reflecting his Spirit Gun off of one of the artifacts.
Yusuke does return the artifacts to Koenma, but the Shadow Sword and Forlorn Hope were noticeably damaged (The sword was covered in Kurama's blood, the Forlorn Hope was broken from taking the blast from Yusuke's spirit gun) and Koenma was punished with 100 spankings.
[edit] Genkai Tournament
Episodes 9-13
Yusuke is convinced by Botan to spend his three day weekend fighting in a tournament hosted by the great Genkai who is looking for an apprentice. Yusuke is ordered to go because the powerful demon Rando has disguised himself so he could copy all of Genkai's techniques and moves just as he did with 99 other psychics.
When Yusuke comes to Genkai's temple, he finds a whole crowd of people and actually finds Kazuma Kuwabara, one of his classmates with great spirit awareness was there. All of the people must first pass a test by drawing papers and if it is red you may pass. People thought it was all luck, but Genkai secretly made them turn red by the amount of Spirit energy one has.
Both Yusuke and Kuwabara pass the first test and now the greatly reduced crowd of people enter an arcade which test your power and spirit awareness. In order to pass the second test, you have to be able to win at least two of the three games. Both Yusuke and Kuwabara pass and after two rounds only twenty people remain for the third test.
For the third test, you are timed and have to get through a dangerous area filled with traps and enemies. Kuwabara uses his great spirit awareness to reach the end in time and amazingly is the first one to arrive. Several moments later, two muscular men arrive and soon four more people come but Yusuke is nowhere to be found. The truth is Yusuke went straight because without the traps and enemies, it would be the fastest way to go. However near the end, he encounters a bat demon named Baldok who flies fast, but not as fast as Hiei. Yusuke ends up defeating him, but arrives several seconds after the time limit ended. After Yusuke tells Genkai that he went straight and easily defeated Baldok, she allows him to pass to the final test.
The final test was to have a fighting tournament between the eight remaining contestants. But there was a catch- the first round was a fight in the dark! In the first of three rounds, Shorin (a young kid who doesn't seem to have much strength) kills Chinpoh. Also, Kazemaru (one of the strong men who arrived right after Kuwabara) defeats Kuroda.
Kuwabara has to fight Musashi and discovers his first power (like Yusuke's Spirit Gun), the Spirit Sword. He defeats Musashi and now Yusuke must face Kibano. (the other strong man who arrived right after Kuwabara) But Kibano has a helmet on that can detect Yusuke's energy. After a hard fight, Yusuke barely wins by breaking Kibano's helmet.
The remaining four fighters now must fight on a hill which is said to have many spirits on it. Yusuke, still out of breath from his match with Kibano, immediately has to fight Kazemaru. Kazemaru uses weapons that target an enemy until the person is hit. Yusuke has to avoid them for a while when suddenly he vanishes, but the ninja throwing stars are still locked on and hit Kazemaru. Kazemaru is defeated but Yusuke is nowhere to be found until Yusuke pops out of a nearby pond. It turns out he slipped and accidentally hit Kazemaru
Kuwabara then has to face young Shorin in the second round. Shorin starts shooting fireballs ("Circles of Inferno") at Kuwabara, but it fails to defeat him. Shorin then tries chanting a certain curse and makes Kuwabara tiny. Shorin then starts squeezing him and soon is forced to throw him on the ground. Kuwabara is then turned back to normal size and is severely wounded. Shorin wins and now Yusuke must face Shorin and is still angry at him for what he did to Kuwabara.
Yusuke ends up knocking Shorin to the ground and it seems that Yusuke just won the tournament, but Genkai is not fooled so when Yusuke says to her that he's won she answers, "Do you really think Rando could be defeated that easily?" Yusuke is shocked and looks behind him to see the rising Rando.
Yusuke then fights Rando and his many attacks he got form 99 other psychics. Yusuke was expected to be killed when dipped into a pond by Rando and eaten alive. Yusuke falls in but Kuwabara's spirit actually leaves his body at that moment and flashes into Yusuke's brain telling him not to give up so easily. From the meeting inside of his thoughts, Yusuke acquires a great deal of Spirit Energy and blasts out.
Yusuke and Rando then go to a duel between Yusuke's Spirit Gun and Rando's Spirit Gun which he copied off of Yusuke. Yusuke wins, but Rando is still alive. So Rando decides to use the same chant that he used on Kuwabara, but accidentally uses it on himself. Yusuke (who now has no spirit energy remaining) simply falls on the tiny demon and wins the tournament.
He is then given quite a shock when he finds out that this tournament was to become Genkai's apprentice and Yusuke is forced to train with Genkai for six months(two in the Japanese version). Afterwards, Yusuke returns and learns a new power, the shotgun which blasts several Spirit Guns at once.
[edit] Four Saint Beasts
Episodes 14-21
Yusuke and Kuwabara feel uncomfortable when they find people who seem to act like zombies everywhere around the city. Botan tells them that this is because they were summoned by the Makai Whistle so they have to go the Maze Castle, home of the four Saint Beasts to break the whistle which is in possession of the leader of the Saint Beasts. Yusuke and Kuwabara are transported to outside of Maze Castle and Botan tries to protect the city from the zombies.
Yusuke and Kuwabara immediately encounter many hooded demons. There were so many of them they probably wouldn't of made it if it weren't for some unexpected visitors. Kurama and Hiei were ordered by Koenma to help them in their mission. They defeated the demons and entered Maze Castle.
They find themselves stuck in a trap when the ceiling starts slowly coming down! They are able to escape and soon encounter the first Saint Beast, Genbu. Genbu is a demon made of stone and can blend into other stone and appear somewhere else made of stone. (for example, he can stick his hand in the stone floor and it can pop out in the stone ceiling) Kurama offers to fight Genbu and he accepts. This was the first time Yusuke ever saw Kurama fight. Kurama kills Genbu by using his rose whip and lashing him. It cuts through many materials including stone. After the battle, Kuwabara claims that he will fight the next Saint Beast (he thinks that they can't be as terrifying as Genbu).
They are soon interrupted when they hear a loud roar coming from above. They run up the stairs and find a large white tiger named Byakko who is the second Saint Beast. He is very strong, but Kuwabara takes him on anyway even though Hiei tries to convince him not to. Byakko tells Kuwabara that even one of his hairs would be able to kill him. Kuwabara takes it as a joke, but Byakko then pulls four of his hairs off and sets them on the ground. They each turn into wild beasts and charge toward Kuwabara. Kuwabara takes out his Spirit Sword and learns to stretch it longer. He points it at the monsters' (who are in a line) mouths and pierces his sword through all of their bodies. They break his power off but then Kuwabara does something unexpected. He runs away and reaches a path that turns into a circle. He then goes around the circle and makes the sword stretch into a circle piercing each of the beast's bodies again but this time connects the handle with the tip of the sword making them not able to break free.
Greatly angered, Byakko jumps off of his balcony and the large tiger challenges Kuwabara. Kuwabara immediately slashes him with his sword, but Byakko absorbs his Spirit Energy. Kuwabara doesn't stop though and keeps giving more and more power to the beast. He grows stronger and stronger until Kuwabara uses up almost all of his energy. Byakko had grown a lot larger from the energy, but then something happened. His body couldn't hold all the energy, causing him to explode and the energy to return to Kuwabara. He survives and impressed with Kuwabara's strength invites him to his "Den of Hell". He agrees and decides to enter the next room. Kuwabara and the others follow him to his lair which has many stone pillars with magma at the bottom. Byakko jumps to the largest pillar and starts shooting balls of energy out of his mouth at Kuwabara as he jumps form pillar to pillar. Kuwabara has one last jump until he reaches the one Byakko is on. Kuwabara misses the pillar but uses his energy to stretch his Spirit Sword and use its support to get him on the pillar. He comes up knocks into Byakko, falling into the magma along with Byakko. Yusuke and the others know they have lost Kuwabara, but then they get their hope back when they hear Kuwabara yelling. It turns out Kuwabara is barely hanging onto the pillar. They rescue Kuwabara and enter through the doorway across the room.
They soon come to a room filled with many doors and Kuwabara uses his Spirit Awareness to detect which one does not have a trap behind it. He finds great power coming from one of them and they enter. The team contacts Botan who is helping Keiko avoid zombies and she tells them that the last two have much greater energy than the first two. They stop when they find a large door that seems to covered in ice.
The team enters and finds the third Saint Beast, Seiryu. But when they were about to fight, the large door opens. It's Byakko in bad condition complaining about how they pushed him into the magma. The team is shocked to see him alive, especially Kuwabara. Seiryu ignores Byakko and kills him.
Hiei was planning on fighting the leader, but Hiei hated Seiryu so much he decided to take him on instead. Hiei gets his leg frozen by Seiryu, but Hiei easily breaks out of the ice and quickly slashes Seiryo 16 times, killing him instantly.
They now had defeated three of the four Saint Beasts, and all that was left was the leader of them all. They encounter a group of many enemies, but Keiko and Botan were in deep trouble so Hiei devises to get Yusuke to the leader of the Saint Beasts, by stacking everyone on top of each other.
Yusuke enters and finds Suzaku with his partner Murugu, but finds him watching Keiko and Botan defending themselves. Suzaku offers Yusuke that if he promises to eat Keiko's heart he'll let Yusuke live. Of course, Yusuke declines the offer and fights him. Suzaku brings out bows and arrows made of energy ("Storm of Torment") and begins firing at him.
Yusuke is in danger, but things get worse when Botan is knocked unconscious and Keiko must defend for both of them from the zombies without any help. Things get even worse when Suzaku uses another attack and makes seven of himself ("Prism of Seven") and uses his "Storm of Torment" attack!
Yusuke in awful condition and he must go to his last resort. He has to sacrifice his life to kill Suzaku and save the others.
Suzaku is defeated and Makai Whistle is broken but Yusuke is nearing death. The team had already killed the group of many demons below and now rushed into Suzaku's lair. Kuwabara sees Yusuke and gives his energy to Yusuke and also faints. When they woke up, they were back in the city in bed. They all survived and the city was free of zombies. Yusuke immidietly ask's about Keiko and Botan, but Kurama and Kuwabara remain silent. He begins to get angry, until Keiko and Botan walk into the room and Kurama and Kuwabara begin laughing about his reaction. Afterwards, Yusuke is walking with Keiko thinking how to explain everything, but Keiko tell's him that Botan has already explained everything to her and that next time he has a case to tell her about it, Yusuke reluctantly agree's.
[edit] Rescue Yukina
Episodes 22-25
Yusuke is sent a videotape by Hiei. At school he meets Kuwabara and ask's to use his VCR at his house, but Kuwabara refuses saying that he doesn't want to take part in another case, buefore reluctantly agreeing. While at school he also run's into Keiko who ask's about the videotape, Yusuke explain's it contains his next job assigment, but Keiko doesn't fully understand his job(Botan had told her it was an internship with a great detective). After berating Botan for having lied to Keiko the four of them watch the video and it says that they have to go rescue an ice maiden named Yukina from a rich, greedy man named Tarukane who kidnapped Yukina because when she cries her tears turn into gems worth thousands of dollars. During the video Kuwabara's older sister Shizuru enters the room and see's the video. They try to pass it of as nothing but busted tape, but due to her high spiritual awareness she was able to see the video.
Before the tape is finished, Kuwabara falls in love with Yukina at the sight of her beauty so he doesn't watch the end. It turns out the part that Kuwabara missed said that Hiei couldn't know about this because Yukina is Hiei's sister, but the team decided not to tell him. Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan arrive at the forest surrounding the castle where Yukina is. It turns out that Tarukane hired a few different people to protect him including the famous Toguro Brothers.
On their way through the forest, they find a spider demon and easily defeat it. Meanwhile, the younger one of the Toguro Brothers is being tested on his strength. He fights a strong demon and uses 30% of his power to kill Tarukane's most violent demon owned. It turns out that Younger Toguro has the power to increase the size of his muscles. Tarukane is astonished and agrees to hire the Toguro Brothers. Tarukane makes a bet with four other rich people who are members of the Black Black Club. Tarukane tells them that there are three intruders (Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan) and there are 12 strong demon guards outside of his castle. The bets is to see who will win. All of them bet on the demons for a few million dollars, but Sakyo (one of them) bets 5 billions on the intruders. The bet is on and of course the intruders win. Younger Toguro notices when all of the demons are wiped out in just a few moments.
Tarukane then makes another bet with the members of the Black Black Club. Tarukane tells them that he has three demons inside of the large castle (known as the Deadly Triad) and is offering money to see who will win. Most of the members bet a few billion on the Triad, but Sakyo bets about 20 billion dollars on the intruders. The bet was on and the intruders had just entered the castle.
Yusuke and Botan were wondering how Kuwabara knew how to find Yukina and he told them that he has love string and a headband of love which will lead him to Yukina. He does actually have to right way, but they soon encounter Miyuki, a female demon who is the first demon of the Triad. Kuwabara refuses to fight her because she's a girl and he refuses to fight females. Yusuke doesn't care and attacks Miyuki. He notices something weird when he jumped in the air and traded blows with Miyuki. Upon landing, Miyuki clutches her breasts in pain and calls Yusuke a pervert. Kuwabara and Botan are still wondering what happened, but Yusuke doesn't tell them.
Miyuki uses her hair as a whip and smashes him against the walls. Kuwabara and Botan are still pondering about what Yusuke did to Miyuki when Kuwabara figures out what he had done and tells Yusuke he deserved it. Yusuke soon dispatches this method of attack and struck Miyuki in the breast, incapacitating her for a few seconds. After she gets up, she starts yelling at Yusuke for attacking her like this. Yusuke soon tires of Miyuki's ranting and grabs her breasts and even reaches under her skirt to grab her crotch, picking her up and smashes her headfirst into the wall, knocking her unconscious. Kuwabara can't take it anymore and challenges Yusuke to a fight, but Yusuke first tells him why he did that. He tells Kuwabara that Miyuki looked suspicious and he was right. By "checking" her, Yusuke confirmed Miyuki was a male, not a girl.
The three intruders then move on to fight the second of the Triad, Inmaki. Inmaki has great speed and is so fast that not even Kuwabara can sense him well with his Spirit Awareness. So Yusuke thinks of an idea and starts running away and makes a sharp right turn. Inmaki of course follows him, and Yusuke reaches a dead end so he turns around and fires his shotgun. One of the many bullets did hit Inmaki, so he was defeated.
The three of them then continued until they encountered the third and final demon of the Triad, Gokumonki. Gokumonki surprised them and grabbed Botan by her jacket. Yusuke and Kuwabara would've attacked but he was going to use Botan as a shield. Yusuke thinks of a plan and tells Botan to lift up her arms. Botan does as she is told and slips out of her jacket. Then after she's out of danger, both of them defeated Gokumonki.
Sakyo won the bet for the second consecutive time and the only fighters left were the Toguro Brothers. Tarukane makes a final bet and Sakyo bets on the intruders for an amazing 66 trillion yen! Tarukane can afford it if he gives everything he has to his name. Tarukane thinks for a second and decides to accept this wild offer because he thinks he's the only one who knows about Toguro's power.
Kuwabara contacts Yukina through their thoughts after defeating Gokumonki and she tells them to get out of here because there are some very strong guards protecting her from intruders. Kuwabara tells her that they defeated all of them, but Yukina answers him back and tells him that the strongest ones (Toguro Brothers) are right next to her. Kuwabara can't sense their Spirit Energy, so he thought that there weren't any more enemies but he was wrong.
Yusuke, Kuwabara, and Botan soon arrive at a large doorway and find themselves in a large room. There they see the Toguro Brothers. In the window is Yukina and Tarukane, but what none of them realize is that Hiei is coming to rescue his long lost sister.
Yusuke and Kuwabara fight the deadly Toguro Brothers. Both of them show them their special powers. Elder Toguro transforms into a sword and a shield and younger Toguro increases the size of his muscles to 40%. Yusuke and Kuwabara both individually try to fight him but they cannot lay a scratch on him. After some hard fighting, Kuwabara charges toward Toguro with is Spirit Sword out and to help him Yusuke fires a Spirit Gun at Kuwabara's back giving him a boost of speed. Kuwabara stabs Toguro in the chest and the Toguro Brothers are down.
Tarukane just lost all of his money and so he orders the others to get out of there with him and to take Yukina with them. However, before he can do so, Hiei comes in and attempts to kill Tarukane when Yukina steps in and stops him. Yukina had no clue that Hiei was her long lost brother (Kuwabara doesn't know either), and Hiei decided that it would be best to keep it that way. Kuwabara was injured and Yukina helped him get better. Kuwabara finally got to meet Yukina and the team headed back to their normal lives, at least until the Dark Tournament Saga.

"Yu Yu Hakusho: Spirit Detective" was released for the Gameboy Advance by Atari. In it, you get to play as Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, or Hiei and play through the entire story of the first 25 episodes, except the end of the game has an added battle where you fight a clone of Suzaku and a clone of Rando, both stronger than the original.
