Spirit-Spirit Sect

The “Spirit-Spirit Sect” (靈[Líng] 靈[Líng] 教[Jiào]) also abbreviated as “Spirit Sect” or “Spiritual religion” (靈教) is an alleged Chinese cult that broke away from the True Jesus Church. The cult was founded during 1985 by Hua Xuehe, whose occupation was a fishing-ditch farmer from the Huaiyin Prefecture in Jiangsu province.

• Although Hua Xuehe once participated in True Jesus Church activities in 1980, his suspicious actions were soon carefully monitored by both the church and the local government; not long afterwards, he left the church and started preaching on his own. So during 1985, he collaborated with another TJC dissenter named Li Kueiyao. Together, they formed the “Spirit-Spirit Sect” in Shuyang County. They soon started claiming that one “could only be saved” through believing in their sect and also criticized the “Old Church” for being “ineffective”.

• At its peak, the Sprit-Spirit cult membership reached as high as 15,000 and became a very large folk religious sect. In 1990, under the Jiangsu government's renovation policies, Hua Hsueh along with Li Kueiyao and other prominent leaders of the sect were held for questioning. This organization also stirred its members to oppose the local government including the Communist Party and attacked the “Three-Self Patriotic Church”. They declaring that “the nation must be ruled by the Gospel” and that “the Spirit-Spirit section should unify the world.” Thus, in this way, the sect was labelled as “anti-government” and was therefore banned. Hua Xuehe was arrested and sent to labour education camps despite 700 members protesting and seriously disturbing the social order.

• According to this website, Hua Xuehe claimed that he was “the second Jesus, Christ the Lord”, who is “the second incarnation of Jesus” descending [upon him]. He said “Huaiyin is Jerusalem.” He also Requested others to politely call him “the Chinese savior” and declared that on the 17th day of the first lunar month, the “Chinese Saviour Christmas” festival celebration is to be held.

• The Sect advocated that “The end of the world is about to come, that the whole human race will be destroyed, and that only by joining the Spirit Sect can escape from the disaster”. This caused many of their believers to give up their farm work and “Wait for the end of the world”.

• They also taught that “When a person falls ill, it is a result of being possessed by demons; therefore the person will get well as soon as the devil is exorcized”. Thus to “heal” their members, Exorcism was practiced by whipping the tied patients and forbidding them to take any medicine. Hua Xuehe and others taught, “the more you offer, the more peace you will receive and the more grace you will get from the family of God” In this way, huge sums of money were collected from their believers.
