Spire FM was awarded the licence to broadcast to the city of Salisbury and surrounding areas by the old Radio Authority (now OFCOM) in 1991. The capital needed to launch the station was raised entirely from local investors and the station went on air on September 5th 1992.

Since its launch Spire FM has become one of the UK’s most successful radio stations and is firmly established as an integral part of the daily lives of the people living in South Wiltshire and West Hampshire.

Spire FM is the most listened to radio station in South Wiltshire and West Hampshire and is recognised as one of the most successful stations in the country with a great reputation for producing quality local programming.

The station has received many industry awards in its history including a prestigious Sony Radio Award for Station of the Year in 1994 and the runner up award in 2003. Other recent awards include: the KPMG Marketing Excellence Award, and Wiltshire Business of the Year finalist.
