Spinifex State College
Spinifex College, located in Mount Isa, in north west Queensland, Australia first opened its doors in 2003. Prior to that the state high schools in Mount Isa were Kalkadoon State High, and Mount Isa High School. These two schools combined, to create one school but with 3 campuses.
Spinifex is building a reputation in the community for a high quality service to students and parents. This has developed from our high expectations and commitment to academic excellence, student achievements and a program catering for a wide range of student abilities and interests.
Junior Campus holds students from years 8 to 10, and Senior accommodates students from years 11 to 12. The third campus, Residential Campus, boards students from all ages who attend Spinifex College. The Res Campus is unique in the fact that it is the first government run boarding school in Queensland.
Spinifex College boasts extraordinary sporting capabilities but it very rarely acknowledges the artistic side of students. Spinifex College has a combined campus Concert band. Students in this band range from intermediate students to the more experienced, playing on instruments such as the flute, clarinet (bass, Bb and alto), saxophone, and percussion. The band placed 3rd at the local Eisteddfod in 2006, placed 2nd in 2005, and received a Silver Award in May for FanFare - a prestigious band competition. The school also has a jazz band. The jazz band formed in 2005 and the following year they took 4th place at eisteddfod. The jazz band reformed to form a Stage Band, which is open to the community.
Spinifex, along with Xstrata Mount Isa, offers Xstrata school scholarships, and Xstrata Work Experience programs for the senior students.
