[edit] Programming

The station broadcasts mainly popular music aimed at 15-34 year olds. It is notable in that unlike most other commercial radio stations, news is broadcast at quarter-to-the-hour, not on-the-hour, and is known as The Story (a play on the popular Dublin phrase "what's the story?"). Entertainment news (The Inside Story) and the Five Word Weather are also broadcast.

[edit] History

The station (which originally applied for its contract as "Spin FM" ) was one of three new ILR stations which were awarded franchises in October 1999 [1]. It was intended to provide an alternative for listeners younger than those catered for by the original two Dublin ILR stations, FM104 and Dublin's 98FM. The station however was subject to delays due to legal action from an unsuccessful opposing consortium [2], however finally took the air as Spin 1038 at 10:38am on 19 April 2002. Despite being initially known as "the dance licence", the station now plays mainly popular music.

[edit] Sister services

A proposed sister station, Spin South West, has been awarded an Independent Regional Radio contract for County Kerry, County Limerick, County Clare, South Tipperary and south-west County Laois. The station will be similar in format to Spin 1038 but will be independently managed and run. A similar application from is before the BCI from Communicorp for a Spin North West station.

Other Irish radio stations in the Communicorp group are Dublin's 98FM, Newstalk, as well as stakes in other radio stations.
