Spice Nepal Private Ltd. (SNPL) is the first privately owned cellular phone company in Nepal. It broke the monopoly held by the state-owned telecommunications company, Nepal Telecom
SPNL is a joint venture of companies from India, Nepal and Kazakhstan. SNPL offers 'Mero Mobile' services in Kathmandu valley; the capital city and Pokhara ; the tourist hotspot of Nepal. It is also aggressively expanding its coverage to other main cities of the country. Kumar Raj Bahadur Singh, son-in-law of King Gyanendra, is the chairperson of the Group VISOR, a Kazakhstan based company that has 75 per cent stake in Spice Nepal. Raj Group, together with some non-resident Nepalis own 20 per cent of equity in the company. Spice Cell of India has five per cent of share in Spice Nepal.
SPNL's entry into the country's mobile phone market comes after the government opened the telecommunications industry to private businesses in 2000. The company distributes unlimited pre-paid and post-paid lines through 32 outlets located at various places in Kathmandu valley.
