The spellthief is a character class in the Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 edition roleplaying game that was introduced in the Complete Adventurer.

[edit] Introduction

The spellthief is arguably one of the more unique base classes to have been introduced in the 3.5 edition. It is basically a rogue type character, with access to some arcane spells and some truly unique abilities based on stealing spells and magical abilities from opponents (or perhaps even from allies).

Mechanically the class is similar to the rogue. It gives up some skill points in exchange for allowing its sneak attack class feature to "steal" a spell from the mind of a spellcaster it has successfully struck. The victim loses that spell or spell slot for the day while spellthief gains the ability then cast the spell within a limited time period. At higher levels the spellthief can steal spell-like abilities from monsters as well. They can also steal spell effects, energy resistance, spell-like abilities and spell resistance. Other features include detecting magic, the rogues trapfinding feature, a mild chance of absorbing spells that hit them, and the sneak attack ability. This all makes for a very capable anti-spellcasting class which has a knack for getting into places other people don't want them to be.

No currently published race has Spellthief as a favored class.

[edit] Important Abilities

The most important abilities are Charisma and Dexterity. Dexterity for weapons and armor, and Charisma for his minor spellcasting abilities later on. Intelligence is only necessary for skills, and strength for damage. Wisdom is the only ability that has little to no use for a Spell-thief.
