Prestige classes

The Spellcaster is a generic class in the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game and was introduced as a generic character class in Unearthed Arcana supplement. The spellcaster is a customizable spontaneous spellcaster who chooses his spells known from the cleric, druid, and sorcerer/wizard spell lists.

[edit] Generic Classes

The Unearthed Arcana supplement released in 2004 introduced optional rules for three completely customizable Player Character classes. These are not intended to be used in conjunction with other base classes or even with prestige classes.

The three generic classes available are: Expert, Spellcaster and Warrior. Each can be customized to fill a large range of concepts thus eliminating the need for dozens of base classes and hundreds of prestige classes.

[edit] Combat

Spellcasters are not intended to be mundane combatants. As such their combat abilities are extreamly limited. They have an attack progression identical to a wizard/sorcerer, and only have minimal hit points (d4). In addition their proficiency with weapons and armor is laughable. A spellcaster’s place in combat is support, healing, artiliary, and/or hiding.

[edit] Saves

The spellcaster has one good save (typically will) and two poor saves.

[edit] Skills

The spellcaster’s skill selection includes knowledge, craft, and profession in addition to a few custom chosen skills. As a result he gets a fair selection of skills. A spellcaster gets 2 skill points per level.

[edit] Spells

Spellcasters are designed to fill the role of the spellcaster (a well named class) when generic classes are used. They may cast spells from wisdom, intelligence or charisma, and may be divine or arcane. Regardless of what ability powers their magic or what the source of their magic is, they retain the same flexibility in spell selection. When choosing spells, the spellcaster may choose spells from the cleric, druids, and sorcerer/wizard spell lists. Thus a spellcaster can be an adept healer, a powerful canon, a child of nature, or any combination.

Like sorcerers, spellcasters cast spells spontaneously. They only know a small number of spells. Their repertoire is slightly larger than a sorcerer, however, they are not able to cast quite as many spells per day.

[edit] Bonus Feats

To allow for further customizing of the class the spellcaster receives bonus feats every 5 levels plus and addition feat at first level. The spellcaster may select any feat or one of special feats only available to generic classes.

[edit] Multiclassing

A Player can take the spellcaster class twice. Once as an arcane caster and once as a divine caster.
