[edit] Character biography

James Sanders was born in New York City. He was working as a pharmacist and chemist when the Grandmaster appeared and offered him the power of superspeed in return for joining the Grandmaster's Squadron Sinister. Originally known as The Whizzer (in writer Roy Thomas' homage to the 1940s Golden Age character The Whizzer), Sanders would later change his name to Speed Demon and join the villainous Sinister Syndicate. Many of his criminal acts have been opposed by Spider-Man. He would fight Spider-Man alone or as part of a larger group of supervillains, such as the Sinister Syndicate. Speed Demon suffered one of his most humiliating defeats when he was knocked out by Frog-Man, who accidentally fell on Speed Demon while he was fighting Spider-Man and the Human Torch.

Sanders joined the newly-reformed Thunderbolts, a group of former villains trying to make it as superheroes, under the command of his former Syndicate leader, the Beetle, now known as MACH-IV. Sanders straddled the line between hero and thief and acted as a bad influence on his teammate, the Blizzard.

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

[edit] Universal Wellspring

Saunders left the Thunderbolts and joined the Grandmasters Squadron Sinister. Joystick followed and then attacked Speed Demon, breaking his legs and then his spirit by taking his powers.

Saunders is not a mutant, he is a mutate like the Folding Circle as well as Silhouette and Midnight's Fire. His powers come from the Universal Wellspring as seen in Thunderbolts #107.

[edit] Powers and abilities

Speed Demon's primary superhuman power is the ability to move, think, and react with high levels of superhuman speed. His entire body is adapted to the rigors of running at great speed including superhumanly efficient cardiovascular and respiratory systems, superhuman strength, stamina, agility, and reflexes. Speed Demon's body is also somewhat tougher than that of an ordinary human, which enables his bodily tissues to withstand the friction and stress caused by moving at such high speeds.
