From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spearing is a penalty called in ice hockey.

A spearing penalty comes when a player uses his stick to poke or (as the name implies) spear the opposing player. This action is like the sport of fencing and is considered one of the biggest offenses in ice hockey and is a major penalty (5 minutes). A player is automatically penalized with a game misconduct and are not allowed to participate in the remainder of the game.
