[edit] Character history
In Devil May Cry mythology, Sparda is a demon that rebelled against his own kind for the sake of the human world two thousand years ago. He defeated the demons and their king, Mundus, and shut the portal to the demon world, sacrificing both his own blood and that of a mortal priestess.[1][2]
But the bulk of Sparda’s power was trapped in the demon realm, sealed inside his sword, and was only accessible with an amulet he took with him into the human world. This amulet was also one of the keys needed to unlock the portal, however when separated the amulet loses it's properties thus rendering it useless.[3][4]
Much of Sparda's life in the human world is unknown, but near the end of his life he married a human woman named Eva, and gave the amulet to her as a gift. She later gave birth to twins, Dante and Vergil. [5]
The boys were each given one half of the amulet by their mother as well as one each of Sparda's other enchanted swords: Rebellion, a sword similar to a zweihänder, was given to Dante, while Vergil received the sword Yamato, a katana-like design.
The cause of Sparda's later death is unknown, but his wife was eventually killed by demons loyal to Mundus, and their sons Dante and Vergil were orphaned and separated, leaving Dante to believe he was alone in the world. [6]
Though absent in the games' main storyline, there is a secret playable character costume for Dante in Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening which is known as Legendary Dark Knight, and some evidence indicates that this is how Sparda looked in human form. In this costume, the character's shadow is the silhouette of Sparda's demonic form, and when the Devil Trigger is used the Legendary Dark Knight becomes Sparda. However, this was also Dante's demonic form when using Sparda's full power in the first game, and Arkham also took on this form (briefly) when he accessed Sparda's power in the third game. [7]
In Devil May Cry, the Legendary Dark Knight's primary weapon is Yamato, the same sword wielded by Vergil in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, while in Devil May Cry 3 he wields Force Edge, the sword used by Dante in Devil May Cry 1 and which transformed into Sparda's sword. He also uses two pistols named Luce and Ombra ("Light" and "Shadow" in Italian), with the same gameplay mechanics of Dante's guns, Ebony and Ivory.
[edit] Sparda's Sword
This is the enchanted sword that Sparda used to defeat Mundus, and that Dante used to defeat Mundus a second time. It is the true form of the Force Edge, the broadsword that was Dante's default sword in the first game (Devil May Cry). He obtained its full power by combining Force Edge with the two halves of Eva's amulet. The Sparda sword is given to Trish near the end of the game by Dante.
In Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, the prequel to Devil May Cry, Arkham was able to use the restored amulet to unlock the power inside the Force Edge. It was revealed in this game that after Sparda defeated the demons he chose to live life as a human and thus abandoned his demonic lineage by transferring his power inside this sword. After Arkham used the amulet to power the Force Edge it did not revert to its true Sparda form because he lacked the blood of Sparda. [8] Dante was able to unlock the Sparda sword in the first game using this method because he was Sparda's son.
Even after the Force Edge turned into the Sparda sword only someone from Sparda's lineage could wield its full power, as Trish is only able to use it as a physical weapon.
