Spar (tree)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A spar tree is a tree used in High Lead logging to which loggers attach cables and use it to guide logs. This technique was especially popular in logging on the West coast of North America where difficult terrain required greater precision in guiding logs. Selecting a tree as a spar is a particularly important task, as loggers need to ensure that the tree is strong and free of rot and will withstand the weight and pressure required. The strength and importance of the spar thus came to hold symbolic meaning for early loggers of the West.
