Space navy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A space navy is a fictional military service arm tasked with waging battle in or exploring space. A staple of space navies in science fiction settings is that they follow blue-water naval traditions and use vessels for similar roles. Space navies are common settings for military science fiction works, particularly in space opera. Some see the logical development of the space forces of the United States as an evolution from the U.S. Air Force Space Command[citation needed], despite the fact that many of these stories (e.g. the Lensman series or Star Trek) were written before the creation of the USAF Space Command. However, the probable reason that a space military would adhere to naval traditions instead is that a large spacecraft would potentially contain thousands of crewmembers operating away from a central command structure for long periods of time, in parallel with blue-water navies[citation needed]. A modern air force, on the other hand, can only keep its vehicles away from an airfield for a short period of time, and the aircraft in question, even the largest currently flying, have minuscule crews relative to modern ships.
