Space 1026
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Space 1026 is a gallery and artists' collective located at 1026 Arch Street in Philadelphia [1], PA. The group was first organized in 1997. Dubbed a "a 10 year experiment" by it's founders, SPACE 1026 is turning into a successful attempt that started as an idea among a few friends.
The collective has managed to grow and expand over the past four years to the current roster of 30+ resident artists. From printmaking to graphic design, music recording to video editing, there is a wide range of disciplines and media being used simultaneously in the multiple studios and workspaces. Rather than seeking out grants and funding, the individuals who work there equally share the rent and expenses of running the studio. By taking the financial responsibility off the gallery, they are able to schedule shows without regard to their profitability. Artists who show in the gallery are from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines and include artists based locally and nationally. [2]
Space 1026 is often associated with other members of the "alternative arts scene" in Philadelphia: Black Floor Gallery [3], The Fabric Workshop and Museum, Vox Populi, and the now defunct South Philadelphia Athenaeum [4].
Space 1026 has exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art [5] in 2002, with a show called "Scratch off the Serial" and again in 2007, in a group show called "Locally Localized Gravity," which focussed on different approaches to artists collectives accross the country. [6] In 2006, Space 1026 had an exhibition at the Yerba Beuna Center for the Arts, as part of another show about artist collectives, called "Peer Pleasure". [7]. They have also had shows in Milan, at the P4 Gallery, the Dumbo Art Center in Brooklyn, NY, and in Toronto, at Magic Pony. [8].
