The municipality covers an area of 189 km², and has a total population of 7,902 (2005). Its mayor is Peder Christensen, a member of the Social Democrats (Socialdemokraterne) political party.
The site of its municipal council is the town of Spøttrup. Other towns and villages in the municipality are Balling, Hvidbjerg, Krejbjerg, Lem, Lihme, Oddense, Ramsing, Rødding, Rødding Hede, Vejby, Vendalhus, Vester Hærup, Øster Hærup, and Ålbæk.
Neighboring municipalities with land connection are Skive to the southeast, Sundsøre and Sallingsund to the northeast, and Vinderup to the south. Neighboring island municipality Morsø to the northwest is separated from the municipality by Salling Strait (Salling Sund) and Kås Bredning, parts of the larger Limfjord which separates the main part of the Jutland peninsula from the island of Vendsyssel-Thy to the north, and which defines most of the municipality's western border, along with the waters of Venø Bay (Venø Bugt) to the southwest.
By January 1, 2007 Spøttrup municipality will cease to exist, as the result of Kommunalreformen ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It will be merged with existing Sallingsund, Skive, and Sundsøre municipalities to form the new Skive municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 682 km² and a total population of 48,368 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Midtjylland ("Mid-Jutland Region").
The municipality is named after Spøttrup Castle (Spøttrup Borg).
