Southwest Virginia Community College

Southwest Virginia Community College (SwVCC or formerly SVCC) is located outside of Richlands, Virginia, on the border of Tazewell and Russell counties, and is one of the 23 schools in the Virginia Community College System. SwVCC was opened in 1968 to serve the residents of Buchanan, Russell and Tazewell counties. Dickenson County is also partially served along with Mountain Empire Community College. On average, over 4,000 students are served during the Fall and Spring semesters. Dr. Charles R. King was the first president to serve the college and retired in 2006, he has been replaced with interm. President Dr. William Snyder. The campus has a very active student government whose current president is Jason Hayes.

  • Buchanan Hall - home of the bookstore, cafeteria, and staff lounge. It is also home of the humanities division and student support services.
  • Tazewell Hall - home of mostly administrative offices. It also houses the math lab, the math/science division, and the nursing program.
  • Russell Hall - home of the business division, the library, and the distance education program.
  • Dickenson Hall - home of the administration of justice program and the photo lab.
  • Davis Hall - home of the automotive lab and the electronics program.
  • Dr. Charlies R. King Community Center - center of the music and physical ed. departments.
  • Booth Hall - currently under construction in Buchanan County, will share space with the Applachian School of Law
  • Currently construction is slated to begin in Spring 2007 on a new building which will house student support services.
  • National Guard Armory
  • Football field and track
  • Baseball field
