Southwest was founded in September 1956 as Southwest Miami Junior-Senior High School, the school was built to alleviate overcrowding at neighboring schools Miami High School, and Coral Gables High School. Originally featuring grades 7-10, the school eventually converted to a high school in 1959 upon graduating its first senior class. Notable alumni include U.S Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Andre Dawson.
