The Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band was organized to unite Southwest Iowa High School Bands into a single group with a common cause -- to promote music in Southwest Iowa in a non-competitive environment and to foster good relations between the member schools.

The Southwest Iowa Honor Marching Band promotes musical excellence and marching skill, bringing out the Southwest District's cohesiveness and unity in a shared activity. This ensemble is the largest marching band in Southwest Iowa and has its goal to march in a major, national music festival.

This ensemble is unique in its make-up, having membership made up of students from the schools in Southwest Iowa. The members audition in May and rehearse 4 1/2 days to prepare for the Iowa State Fair Parade and the Fiesta Bowl Parade.

Members wear their own schools' uniform and guard members spin the flag of their own band. This creates a wonderful visual and musical experience for the audience and band alike.

The band is directed by a volunteer band director board in conjunction with a volunteer board of school administrators. Each part of the band is directed by a volunteer band director who is an expert on that particular section. The head director and assistant director are elected from the board and oversee all the aspects of making this band happen. The band organizes every other year with the sole purpose of marching in the Iowa State Fair Parade and a major bowl parade.
