Southern Sydney Freight Line

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The $175 million Southern Sydney Freight Line project, a mainly single track railway, is to be built from Sefton railway station to Macarthur railway station to separate freight trains from passenger trains.

The line is being built by the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) who commenced the Environmental Impact Assessment in February 2005.

The Southern Sydney Freight Line is to be constructed along the existing rail corridor adjacent to the existing track. It will connect the existing ARTC rail network at Macarthur with the metropolitan freight only network at Sefton and provide direct access for freight services to Chullora, Enfield, Rozelle and Port Botany marshalling yards.

At present, the movement of freight in Sydney is restricted to off-peak periods. This line will form a dedicated corridor between Port Botany and Macarthur which will allow the movement of freight to occur in peak periods as well as off peak. The line will allow greater efficiency in both commuter and freight services.

The introduction of a dedicated freight rail line will form an important part in the development of the operations of Port Botany which is being expanded as part of a project announced by the Government of New South Wales several times between 2002 and 2005.

The new freight line is a single track with no overhead wires extending over a length of 35 kilometres adjacent to the existing track, with its location within the existing rail corridor chosen to minimise impact on the community.
