The Southern Railway U Class is a class of 2-6-0 steam locomotive.

The South Eastern and Chatham Railway K Class of 2-6-4Ts, introduced as a development of the N Class moguls, had a reputation for rough riding. This resulted in the Sevenoaks rail crash of 1927 and it was decided to rebuild the 20 members of the K Class as 2-6-0 tender locomotives. These formed the new U class, and were joined by 30 more new engines.

Maunsell rebuilt No. 890 with 3 cylinders in 1928, forming the prototype for the U1 Class. BR added 30000 to their numbers after nationalisation in 1948.

They were all withdrawn between 1962 and 1966. Four have survived, (3)1618, (3)1638, (3)1806 and (3)1625.
