The Tasmania South Premier League is, jointly with the Tasmania North Premier League, the highest level football (soccer) competition in Tasmania. Nationally, it is one grade lower (technically) than the A-League and is controlled by the Football Federation Tasmania (FFT). Following the demise of the Tasmanian State League in 2000, the Southern and Northern Premier Leagues have become the state's highest level of Football competition. Instead of a statewide league, the two regional leagues determine a southern and northern champion, who then play-off for the state championship.
[edit] Promotion and Relegation
There is no promotion to a higher league, as it is the highest league in Tasmania (equally high as the Northern Tasmanian Premier League). Promotion and relegation occur to the Southern Tasmanian Division One.
At the conclusion of each season the bottom Premier League Club has a home and away play-off against the highest placed Division One Club to determine who will play in the Southern Tasmanian Premier League for the next season. As Division One contains a mix of independent clubs and reserve teams from Premier League clubs, the play-off only occurs if an independent club finish top of Division One. If a Premier League Club's reserve team finishes highest than the bottom placed Premier League club stays in the league the next season.
