Southern Derby

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Southern Derby is a fan-based cup competition between United Soccer Leagues First Division teams based in the Southern United States (most notably North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia). The first edition was contested in 2000, and won by the Raleigh Capital Express.

The Southern Derby was created by the fans of the teams involved to promote a friendly competition and rivalry along the clubs involved. It may have been the first Cup competition of its kind in American Soccer History.

The new USL-1 team, the Carolina Railhawks (of Cary, NC) have been approved to play in the Southern Derby starting in 2007. Other teams may be added to the Cup competition in the future.

Throughout the years the cup has been played in, and held by, four teams in four cities.
