Southampton Township is a Township in Burlington County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the township population was 10,388.

What is now Southampton was originally incorporated as Coaxen Township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1845, from portions of Northampton Township (now known as Mount Holly Township, which lasted for about three weeks when it was renamed Southampton Township on April 1, 1845. Portions of the township were taken to form Pemberton Township (March 10, 1846), Shamong Township (February 19, 1852), Lumberton Township (March 14, 1860), Woodland Township (March 7, 1866) and Tabernacle Township (March 22, 1901).^[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 114.7 km² (44.3 mi²). 114.0 km² (44.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.54%) is water.

Southampton Township borders Pemberton Township, Woodland Township, Tabernacle Township, Medford Township, Lumberton Township, and Eastampton Township.

Leisuretowne is a census-designated place and unincorporated area located within Southampton Township.

As of the census² of 2000, there were 10,388 people, 4,574 households, and 3,046 families residing in the township. The population density was 91.1/km² (235.9/mi²). There were 4,751 housing units at an average density of 41.7/km² (107.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.09% White, 1.20% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.30% from other races, and 0.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.29% of the population.

There were 4,574 households out of which 19.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 6.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.79.

In the township the population was spread out with 17.8% under the age of 18, 4.8% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 31.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $44,419, and the median income for a family was $57,419. Males had a median income of $45,785 versus $30,134 for females. The per capita income for the township was $26,977. About 2.6% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.8% of those under age 18 and 2.5% of those age 65 or over.

Members of the Southampton Township Committee are Mayor James Young, Deputy Mayor John Hicks, C. Edman Budd, Joseph Laufer and Robert Moore.^[4]

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

Southampton Township is in the Third Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 8th Legislative District.^[5]

New Jersey's Third Congressional District, covering portions of Burlington County, Camden County and Ocean County, is represented by Jim Saxton (R, Mount Holly). New Jersey is represented in the Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 8th legislative district of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Martha W. Bark (R, Mount Laurel) and in the Assembly by Francis L. Bodine (D, Mount Laurel) and Larry Chatzidakis (R, Mount Laurel). The Governor of New Jersey is Jon Corzine (D, Hoboken).

Burlington County is governed by a five-member Board of Chosen Freeholders. Burlington County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director James K. Wujcik, Deputy Freeholder Director William S. Haines, Jr., Dawn Marie Addiego, Vincent R. Farias and Aubrey A. Fenton.

The Southampton Township Schools serve students in kindergarten through eighth grade at School #1 (K-2), School #2 (3-5) and School #3 (6-8).

High school students in Southampton Township attend Seneca High School located in Tabernacle Township, which is part of the Lenape Regional High School District, a regional high school district which serves the eight municipalities of Evesham Township (2,432 students), Medford Lakes (215 students), Medford Township (1,229 students), Mount Laurel Township (1,868 students), Shamong Township (447 students), Southampton Township (437 students), Tabernacle Township (500 students) and Woodland Township (64 students).
