South Whitehall Township is a township in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is a suburb of Allentown, Pennsylvania, in the Lehigh Valley area of the state.

The population of South Whitehall Township was 18,028 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 44.6 km² (17.2 mi²). 44.3 km² (17.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it (0.46%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 18,028 people, 6,943 households, and 5,019 families residing in the township. The population density was 406.6/km² (1,052.8/mi²). There were 7,154 housing units at an average density of 161.3/km² (417.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township was 95.67% White, 1.02% African American, 0.03% Native American, 2.07% Asian, 0.44% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.51% of the population.

There were 6,943 households out of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the township the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 4.6% from 18 to 24, 22.4% from 25 to 44, 27.0% from 45 to 64, and 24.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 85.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.6 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $54,759, and the median income for a family was $64,291. Males had a median income of $46,963 versus $30,345 for females. The per capita income for the township was $27,486. About 3.1% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.7% of those under age 18 and 4.8% of those age 65 or over.

South Whitehall Township is best known as the home of Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, one of the most popular U.S. amusement parks.

South Whitehall Township is part of the Parkland School District and jHigh school students in the district (grades nine through 12) attend Parkland High School, which is located in the township on Cedar Crest Boulevard.

Parkland High School has graduated several prominent alumni, including actresses Michaela Conlin of Fox's Bones and Aimee Mullins of World Trade Center, The Devil Wears Prada author Lauren Weisberger and professional football player Tim Massaquoi of the Miami Dolphins.
