South Plains Mall is a 1.2 million square foot shopping mall located in Lubbock, Texas. It is located at the northwest corner of Texas Loop 289 and Slide Rd. in the busy shopping district of southwest Lubbock. It's the largest one story shopping mall in the country.
South Plains Mall is anchored by five major department stores (Sears, Mervyn's, JCPenney, Bealls and two Dillard's) and contains over 150 shops, restaurants and kiosks. The mall serves the entire South Plains region. The mall opened in July 1972 and has undergone three major expansions since then. The interior of the mall is still in its original form, with retro colored tiles, bricks, and fountains. Even outside the mall, the walls are brown with brick.
As of 2006, South Plains Mall is one of the few large malls in Texas not to have a Macy's, even though the department store does not reach into West Texas, except El Paso. There was speculation that if Mervyn's were to close their store in Lubbock, then Macy's would consider that spot, however Mervyn's in Lubbock is one of the 12 stores still in operation in Texas. Other speculations suggest that Macy's would open at the new Canyon West Shopping Center, however there are no confirmed reports of it at this time.
